Children with their grown-ups are invited to participate in a day of immersion in nature and the patterns that surround us, Sunday July 17th.

Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) invites you to join in workshops with internationally renowned photographer Michael Forster Rothbart, Bhala Jones, a nationally recognized artist, and local favorites Mary Peterson and Cindy Ketchum at the Hartwick College Pine Lake Environmental Campus. The day's activities will include photography, leaf printing, hiking, teleidoscope crafts and dance. Younger children will also enjoy storytime. Optionally, families can stay, explore and even swim in this beautiful setting, minutes from downtown Oneonta.
Activities will be tailored for children aged 3 through 13.

Expect to arrive at Pine Lake, 1894 Charlotte Creek Road, Oneonta NY after 10:30am and stay until 3:30pm. Registration is required, although late comers will be placed in workshops on a space-available basis. The cost is $25 for the first child, $10 per additional child and includes lunch for the children and admission to Pine Lake. This program is made possible by a grant from the Chenango County Council on the Arts.

When you look at a picture in a frame, where do your eyes naturally wander? What are the patterns they follow? During the photography session, children will explore how to look into a camera and the effects of centering and off-centering a composition. Composition of flower and leaf collections will be considered during the floral pressing activities. Everything changes when viewed through a teleidoscope, which is similar to a kaleidoscope. The dance portion will highlight how native peoples used nature as an inspiration to move.

"This event ties directly into our mission in three ways," says Aaron Sorensen, board member and OWL enthusiast. "It is immersive play and learning, identification of community resources and a great opportunity for children to interact with their grownups."

Events are scheduled for 11:00am to 3:30pm but participating families are encouraged to spend the entire day enjoying the Pine Lake Environmental Campus. Dine at the nearby Tally Ho Restaurant on July 17th and if you mention OWL, 10% of your purchase will be donated to OWL.
